Kaillera Source Code Christophe

Postby gear323 » Sun Sep 21, 2003 9:01 pm

Christophe,

I know that kaillera is only a part time (if that) hobby for you. The state at which Kaillera is in now is actually pretty darn good but as we all know there is much room for improvements. Can you please let us know if you’re planning on working on kaillera at all any more? Is kaillera ever going to be worked on by you or anyone else ever again?

I used to hope that you would release the source code so that Kaillera would be updated much more frequently. I do see that doing so would probably result in many different (incompatible) versions of kaillera which may make things worse than they are now.
I do however hope that if you do decide that you do not have any interest on working on kaillera that you would give the source code to a fellow programmer that has interest in the project. In my opinion Kaillera kicks some major ass and is something I would have only dreamed of if it wasn’t for both you and the Mame team. It seems like a sin to just forget about it.

I do respect your decision, whatever it may be, however, I hope you consider taking some type of action.

Thanks for all the effort you have put into Kaillera so far and making dreams of many people a reality.

James

"Listen to me coppertop, we don't have time for twenty questions. It's either our way, or the highway."

*opens car door*

"You have to trust me."

"Why."

"You know that road, Neo, you've been down there before, and I know that's not where you want to be."

Sorry, obligatory Matrix reference.

The only way Chris will EVER show any more interest in the project is if someone offers him $50,000 to either release the source code or iron out the bugs. It's all Nulsoft's fault. Blame them.

I chatted with SC not too long ago..

His theory is basically kaillera grew out of -C's control, it got bigger than he could handle.

Otherwise why the support from Nullsoft on hosting the downloads? Nullsoft probably eats tons of bandwidth a month just for the mame32k.exe downloads.

To sort out kaillera would take a monumental effort, not just one guy. I don't think -C has the time to do it, thats all. Just look at how complex msnZONE or kali is, many times more than kaillera.

I shouldn't give specifics, SC never told me if I could make it public. Let's just say SC found what has become of the kaillera scene to be depressing and leave it at that. (vague yet accurate)

You can still talk to him on his server, he pops his head in once in a while.

If -C can't handle Kaillera as it is now, I'm sure there are a group of dedicated coders (*cough*) who would be more than happy to take over the project. As full of mojob as the Kaillera community is, there are still a handful of people with the resources to take over this project. We can only go so far with hacking the dlls and hooking onto windows to do certain extra things. And the vast majority of these hacks are for a single platform.

I agree it's sad, any time you realize there are more people talking poop than talking sense and more idiots trying to insult people than help, you know you've got something. Common courtesty is thrown out the window with a 1 ton weight attached to it when you log onto a Kaillera server.

Of course, many of these problems are solved with moderation features such as kicks and bans. Once these get officially added in some form or another, the quality of service will improve because people won't be able to get away with crap.

Assholes aside, I don't think it's in a very bad state. The code might be sloppy, but we're all victims of our own genius. 8)

He quit...

Not sure if it was something self inspired, or corporate inspired (I.E. AOL/nullsoft said no smokey the herbie) but last he told me he quit. :/

Could send him out on another date with the roomate though :D If he's up for it! She's a heartbreaker though :( -C if you're reading this PM me i'll give you her cell, she's single at the moment :drinking:

Toger, it's good to know you still have SOME way of getting in contact with -C. Can you give me your own opinion on how much $$$ it would take to get him to either A)rework the program from the ground up or B)release the source code and hand it over to someone else? Please don't say "A whole lot" or "More money than you think". Just give me, in your opinion, a rough ballpark figure....

I don't think you could pay him to rework it, kinda busy at the moment (check his activities on the nullsoft forums, he's been a busy boy)

Uhh buy the source? I'm not sure if he'd go for that either... Remember, his salary is 6 figures AND he get's to work from home a few days a week. I honestly don't think he's gonna do it for money. (But send a team of 6 or 7 high priced escorts (hookers) over there and he might :D I mean sure, some guys get a menagutwa once in their life, but how many get a manage o 6?
