How to get .dats working in MAME32K .90

I really really really need help to get .dats working. (You know, files like History.dat, Cheat.dat, Mameinfo.dat and Hiscore.dat etc, etc.) Unfortunately, it says the emulator cannot find the file even though I put it in the same directory as the MAME emulator (as with most MAME emulators) and it still doesn't seem to work. Can anyone help me?

Hmm.. they always worked for me, so long as everyone playing had the exact same file in their mame directory...

What emulator version are you trying to use this with?

Does it work offline?
Set your mojob mame color in display to match your stupid ass desktop color to avoid black screen in netplay, fukaz. t(';'t -TFR, AD 2-20-02

^I know for sure that there is supposed to be a directory where you put DAT Files, but I can't remember. Can anyone help me out?
