I required registration some time ago because people would just come on here and spam and troll with "guest." It really got out of hand, especially with people "impersonating" each other to flame-bait. Got old fast...

So if people want to read the boards, they have to register, but you can't force them to post.

And I know a lot of people (myself included much of the time) check here only to see if there's been any new files released, not to chat up a storm with people about whatever. No offense of course!

Well welcome back.

Sadly Christophe emailed me a few times about the time the site went down the last two times and said he was coming back and working on the project again, then he vanished again, twice. So who knows that that madman is up to these days... oh well!

I wouldn't mind if he came back, obviously he's having somebody pay to keep the site going, and goatse man is gone, so better than nothing I guess. Long as we still have moosehead and emulinker and anti3d and buddhateam...

But nothing would beat an actual bugfixed release of kaillera.

Did he really work on some Xbox live! thingy? 'Cause they have recently added some downloadable emulated arcade games with online play that apparently has many bugs. But it's only a handful of games last I heard, so it can't be that big. But who knows. If Micro$oft got their claws into it though that might not bode well for us, he might not be at liberty to release any of the code for free if they made him sell it to them or something. ;P

But then again I guess we have a venue to play emulated games online for free now. Not perfect, but it's something. It's the only way some of us will ever get to play many of these games with other people these days...

LOL, heh you should know better than I do that it's the usual christophe Up to no good. It was just a freeware thing, I don't think M$ would take kindly to him Modding the Bios so he could Run MAME and KAILLERA

There's an estimate of about 150+ current U.S. users, and half probably don't give a damn about these forums. Sad, but true.

As for Christophe, I figured he could have made a deal with Micro$oft to allow him to do whatever. As far as Mame is concerned, I'm sure Mamedev couldn't argue Micro$oft down, or they could always just use a different emulator. Mame isn't the only thing you can add kaillera online support to after all!


As far as people registering and then not posting, it could have to do with people using fake email addresses because they come here to troll or something, and then they can't actually post because of email registration not going through (because you need a real email addy to activate). Another reason could be that they just want to register here to see what's going on, and read posts, not necessarily to post themselves.

About the biggest amount of people on here we got since Christophe went up missing and TFR stopped updating was that time with all the t0rr3nt r0m links. Then we had a ton of guests and people spamming and trolling as well as contributing. Now it's quieted down. I could un-require registration, but then we'd get the usual people advertising their online dating services and get-rich-quick pyramid schemes and "click my site to help me make money" cons.

I spend so little time here anyway, I just wouldn't want to have to fix that every single time I visit by banning them one at a time...

Anyway I think both Toq and Christophe were much older than college age, unless you mean like some kind of doctorate or post-doctorate work...

Anyway it seems like Christophe is working for Microsoft OR some other big company OR he started his own company and he's working on that, and too busy and doesn't care about the community as a whole worrying about where he is (he only tells individuals what he's up to now and then when he feels like it).

Toqer, I thought he got tired of the community since C- was gone, found other interests, and then some weird stuff like him being banned (either he banned himself or requested somebody ban him, I guess, because I never banned him, and if he was banned and didn't want to be he had only to ask and I'd have unbanned him...), which I don't get.

Nothing has really changed in the last three years except that Emulinker, anti3d and buddhateam have sprung up to fill the void left by mamemore, TFR, and EKmame and continue development. Christophe hasn't done new development on Kaillera in a long time, so it's always been other people, but it hasn't been until the last couple of years that anyone worked on a new server replacement (we're not there yet of course).

I closed the ranting forum because it had just become a spam pit. It's been pretty quiet because people either don't know we exist, don't care, or are just happy with mame32k .64 because they have slow computers and only care about 5 or 6 fighting games that work "good enough." Or Kawaks, I will admit there are a sizable number of Kawaks users, playing the exact same games basically.

FinalBurnAlpha, Kawaks, Nebula, they're essentially emulators that appeal to the vs. fighter fanboys and cps2 fanboys. The kiddie community was hugely based on CPS2 and NeoGeo fighters after all, and they continue to be. They're like the counter strike mavens of the emulation world. I kinda miss the obsession over DnD:SOM. At least that game was somewhat cooperative and unique, rather than just the same old dragon punches, fireballs and super combo juggles and whining/bragging.

There are a few old school servers, but I don't know how much of them are actually populated by old school players (ie: non vs. fighter fanboys and kiddies).
